The Teaching Profession in Ghana : My Concerns by Enock Nimfour

The Teaching Profession in Ghana : My Concerns by Enock Nimfour

I have invariably cherished and dreamt of becoming a teacher who will impart sound knowledge, imbue students with skills and support them to cultivate acceptable behaviours in other to fit into wherever they find themselves. I was fortunate enough to get great teachers to take me through this journey. My dream of becoming a teacher was mainly influenced by the relentless efforts of teachers who saw my hidden prospects, moulded me to bring the very best out of me... I appreciate that a lot.! This is not far fetched in the life of every Ghanaian student. We have dozens of reasons to celebrate teachers on a special day like this. Ghana's massive developments cannot be celebrated at the neglect of the considerable contributions of educators who have helped raise prominent professionals who contribute significantly to all sectors of the economy. Teachers offer their lives for students' well-being. They father the fatherless and serve as the mother for the motherless. They provide shield to learners who come under them. The love, care and protection offered to students by teachers can never be allowed to go unrecognized. Some teachers give hope to the hopeless, motivate those who feel weary and paint our futures before us so as we could strive towards their attainments. Imparting knowledge, in my opinion, is akin to giving life. The life of every individual could be made better or worse by the effort of a teacher. It is by fact that students and for that matter learners could not realize all their aspirations in life but by the assistance of a teacher. Last night, I had a dream and I saw myself in a classroom teaching students. Huh!, I hurriedly jumped from my sleep and almost shouted " Jesus Save Me" because the teaching profession in Ghana for some time now has not been given the needed regard and recognition. The hard truth is that, the required respect that needs to be accorded to the teaching profession has been thrown to the dogs. Institutions established to champion the course of the teaching profession sometimes tend to persecute teachers in their quest to deliver their services. The interests of our cherished teachers appear to be the second thought of policymakers. Salaries and remuneration are the least to talk of.Most countries that have developed so well with the robust economies that we so much desire, treated the educators in their countries with high regard and accorded them much respect for teaching is indeed a noble profession. Teachers in Ghana deserve the best.!! May God bless all TEACHERS!! You Worth Celebration!!
